A worked example

A 34-page specification filed within the standard three-month period: €250 service fee + €272 translation (34 × €8) + €100 official fee = €622. Nothing else is added afterwards.

Longer specifications scale with the page count only — the service fee does not change.

Important

The Unitary Patent does not cover Slovakia

A unitary patent currently takes effect in 18 member states. Slovakia is not one of them — it signed the UPC Agreement but has not ratified it.

The practical consequence is simple: if you want patent protection in Slovakia, classical validation is the only route. Requesting unitary effect does not give you Slovakia, and it does not extend your Slovak deadline.

Questions we get

How long do I have to validate a European patent in Slovakia?

Three months from the date on which the mention of the grant is published in the European Patent Bulletin. An additional three-month period is available on payment of a surcharge.

Does the whole specification have to be translated into Slovak?

Yes. Slovakia requires a translation of the entire European patent specification and claims — description, claims and abstract — not just the claims alone.

What happens if I miss the deadline?

The European patent is deemed to have been without effect in Slovakia from the outset. It is not a curable procedural defect in the ordinary sense.

Do I need a Slovak representative?

A proprietor without a seat or residence in Slovakia — or in the Czech Republic — must be represented locally. A Slovak or Czech patent attorney or attorney-at-law can act.

Does the Unitary Patent cover Slovakia?

No. Neither Slovakia nor the Czech Republic has ratified the UPC Agreement. A unitary patent has no effect in either country, and classical validation remains the only route to protection here.

How much does it cost?

Do you handle renewals after validation?

Yes. We monitor annuity due dates and can pay them on your behalf. Reminders are free whether or not you use us for payment.
